The first installment of Dune, a science-fiction epic starring Timothée Chalamet, notched an estimated $40.1 million at the North American box office over the weekend. It marks the biggest opening for Warner Bros this year. So far, Dune has made $220 million globally. This weekend, it debuted with $21.6 million in China.

Dune is the second big-screen attempt to adapt Frank Herbert's 1965 epic, following David Lynch's much derided 1984 version. Villeneuve's Dune, which adapts only the first half of the book, stars Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya and Javier Bardem.
